Building a Collection

Traditionally in Australia collectors have pursued complete sets of Australian coins. A complete set would involve all the ½ Pennies, Pennies, Threepences, Sixpences, Shillings, Florins and Crowns. The collection would have been the best that the pocket could afford and include at some stage a 1930 Penny & a 1923 ½ Penny. Grades would run the range of Very good through to Uncirculated.

Starting probably in the 1980’s but in some cases earlier specialists evolved who collected one series or the coins of a particular monarch. Without naming the owners the finest collection of florins was compiled in Mt Isa, the finest shillings in Blackheath and the finest sixpences in Bathurst. The famed collection of Frank Gates was broken up in 1986 and he continued his passion for coins assembling high grade George V1 and Elizabeth 11 eventually assembling 15 Sets!

What should you collect?

Firstly I hope you have read the previous article on Third Party grading and had a look on the website of PCGS. I hope this has at least made you lean towards a collection of beautiful PCGS graded coins.

The possibilities for a great collection are many. For a modest budget great coins can be purchased. Your collection can be a great challenge, built up over time and ultimately financially rewarding.

The collection can be acquired using 21st century technology with information acquired by you using Aussie Graded Coins and PCGS.

Issued in Perth & Melbourne. Collect the Melbourne issues 1955 to 1963 or the Perth issues or both.

The keys are the 1955 & 1956 Perth Coppers. These coins look absolutely fantastic in PCGS holders.
